Investment Update
At HOSTPLUS, we are always mindful that investment risks should be spread around, so that not all of our eggs are in one basket.
One of the most effective ways to spread investment risk is to take advantage of the benefits of diversification by investing across many asset classes and across different geographies. This means than we invest in Australia and offshore. It also means that we invest in listed asset classes (like shares and bonds) as well as unlisted asset classes (like infrastructure and property).
In this edition of MORE magazine, we’ll take a closer look at HOSTPLUS’ infrastructure investments in Australia.
When we make an investment in infrastructure, we typically own a slice of a single-purpose public system, service or facility that is necessary for economic or social activity in a region.
- Economic infrastructure assets include roads, railway, water, sewerage, telecommunication systems and energy generation and distribution.
- Social infrastructure assets include hospitals, schools, universities, public housing, retirement facilities, law courts and prisons.
You may be surprised to know that HOSTPLUS currently invests in the following Australian infrastructure assets.
Investing in real infrastructure assets provides an investment return from the cash flow that is generated from the asset’s activity (for example income is received every time aeroplanes land at our airports, or when cars and trucks use our toll roads, or when electricity is generated or transmitted via our assets).
Apart from the diversification benefits that come with spreading investment risk across many assets and regions, investing in infrastructure also provides indirect benefits because each infrastructure asset supports economic activity in a region and ultimately also contributes to nation building! HOSTPLUS proudly invests in Australian Infrastructure on behalf of our members.
